There are few living dance music legends as globally renowned as New York’s Danny Tenaglia. Now starring in his Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival debut on Sunday, April 27th in the Dance tent, Danny is set to proselytize with his revered collection of music from the annals of dance music’s catalog to an all-ages audience for the first time ever in the desert.

Above & Beyond ‘Anjunabeats 100′ CD/DVD : US Tour Dates + Coachella

Above & Beyond

‘Anjunabeats 100’ CD/DVD

(Ultra Records)
U.S. April/May Tour, including Coachella!

ABOVE & BEYOND E-CARD

“Coachella is right up there with Glastonbury. You can’t go far wrong with festivals that have guaranteed sunshine and the line-up is fantastic this year as usual. I’m just hoping we’re not on at the same time as Death Cab for Cutie, as I definitely want to catch them.” – Above & Beyond’s Tony McGuinness

Above & Beyond ‘Anjunabeats 100’ is the culmination of the first vinyl century of one of the UK’s most accomplished & unswerving independent dance labels. 3 DJs and 1000’s of meticulous & painstaking A&R man-hours have brought Above & Beyond’s brainchild Anjunabeats to the threshold of this 100th release compilation and accompanying DVD. The bonus DVD ‘From Goa To Rio’, captures their recent global adventures including the epic NYE show in front of 1 million people. Check out the amazing trailer here – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5NIlHsF4QI

Over the last 8 years trance music’s true artisans: Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness, & Paavo Siljamäki have cultivated Anjunabeats from its backroom beginnings to the apex of worldwide dance recognition. DJ Mag described Anjunabeats in 2008 as “the most consistent trance label in the world” and its discography has engaged the playlists of pretty much every EDM DJ out there. Central to that success has been the forging of the oft-noted ‘Anjunabeats sound’… Part of the label’s DNA from the very start, it has rendered their releases instantly identifiable as ‘an Anjuna track’ to music lovers & diehard clubbers alike.

Here in 2008 Above & Beyond themselves need very little introduction. 2 top 20 hits (including one under their OceanLab alias) and a mega-selling, hugely-praised debut album in the form of ‘Tri-State’ have firmly established them (to quote Pete Tong) as “the UK’s new dance superstars”. In addition to that they’ve remixed some of the world’s most influential artists (including Madonna & Dido) and regularly DJ to stadium-sized audiences, most recently performing to an audience of 1 million on Barra Beach in Rio on New Year’s Eve. In that process they have propelled themselves up the DJ rankings, breaking into the world’s Top 10 in 2006 and taking them within touching distance of the coveted No.1 position.

Mixed and compiled by the trio, ‘Anjunabeats 100’ delivers a perfect cut-view of the music and artists that have brought the imprint to where it is today. It features tracks and mixes from established trance trailblazers like Above & Beyond & Andy Moor, OceanLab, Gabriel & Dresden, Matt Hardwick, Smith & Pledger & Super8 & Tab. In addition it decisively highlights Above & Beyond’s ability to push to the fore new trance talent (using Anjunabeats as the hub) with debuting artists like Luminary, Israel’s Maor Levi, Alt+F4 & Boom Jinx. Also included on the Anjunabeats 100 package is a Bonus DVD, featuring footage of Above & Beyond’s Anjunabeach parties in India and Brazil. The DVD includes breathtaking scenes from their New Year’s Eve show in front of 1 million people, as well as fascinating behind the scenes footage and interviews.

Think of ‘Anjunabeats 100’ then not so much as a ‘best of’ - but more like a ‘best of the best’ compilation!

Above & Beyond ‘Anjunabeats 100’ is out now on Ultra Records.

Balance 013 mixed by SOS

(Desyn Masiello, Omid 16B and Demi)

WMC 2008 Album Launch Parties

EQ Recordings / US Release Date: April 29th

Featuring a spot-on selection of sounds from yesterday, today and tomorrow’s electronic maestros, including an eclectic mixture of the likes of Aeroplane, Aphex Twin, Bryan Ferry, The Cure, Loco Dice, Speedy J, Omid 16B and more…

After 12 albums of cutting-edge dance music from all corners of the globe, EQ’s visionary Balance series has evolved into a never ending search to find the perfect equilibrium: the happy marriage of integrity, innovation and entertainment. Balance 013 continues this great tradition but gives it to you supersized, with three DJs blazing a trail of 56 tracks across three jam-packed CDs.

At the helm of this voyage is London-based DJ collective SOS (aka SexOnSubstance), featuring Demi, Desyn Masiello and Omid 16B. As friends, producers, DJs, label owners – and model clubland citizens – Demi, Desyn and Omid are three of the most passionate talents working in electronic music today. Taking inspiration from their SexOnWax and Deeper Substance imprints to form SOS in 2004, they’ve built a first-rate reputation for quality music, inventive mixing and an infectious party spirit, whether it’s on a boat along the Thames, deep inside Bedrock or Ministry of Sound, or glowing in the sun in Ibiza or Miami. Like Danny Krivit, François K and Joe Claussell’s legendary Body & Soul connection before them, the chemistry between the members of SOS makes for a proper three-headed DJ monster.

Balance 013 marks the first time the trio has committed their energetic and eclectic sound to CD, and the result is nothing short of mind-blowing. Having locked themselves away for weeks, submerged in their home studios, SOS painstakingly programmed and pieced together a three-disc opus using many of their signature re-edits, top-drawer treasures from underground troves, and a few kinky surprises out of left field.

The journey begins with crashing waves and a sublime guitar solo. Omid’s track ‘Seagull’, made using a simple four-track when he was in an early-90s band called The Reunion, is heard here for the very first time. We then glide into a realm of guitar loops and spaced out disco. And from there we catch a chugging, hypnotic groove that takes us right into the heart of the mix. Here the SOS sound snakes cleverly between cosmic dub, ambient breakbeats, Arabian horns and all things house. It’s a playground perfect for the more experimental shades of SOS’s palette.

The next disc continues where the first left off with The Cure’s ‘Lullaby’. However, this time it’s a special up-tempo edit that blends the blissful nostalgia of the original with a new, dreamy soundscape that lies beyond. (Actually getting clearance to use ‘Lullaby’ in this context involved another massive effort by SOS, which ultimately led to Robert Smith himself helping the guys out!) Continuing to build the mix, SOS passes through the deepest analogue territories before hitting the acid funk running. In true SOS style, things later take a turn for the surreal when the rude boys splice it up to ask, in the voice of Queen’s frontman Freddie Mercury, ‘is this the real life’? After an infusion of twisted, percussive techno, the energy flow reaches a climax before dropping back two decades to the timeless party sounds of Inner City’s ‘Big Fun’.

The final mix is every bit as epic and compelling. It’s also more club-orientated, with tracks cherry-picked from a brotherhood of underground talents. Sure enough at times it gets pretty intense, with prime dancefloor cuts from the likes of Aphex Twin, but it’s always in keeping with the ebb and flow of the project. Effortlessly organic and seamlessly dynamic, the sequence progresses, releasing pressure and leading to the atmospheric finale entitled ‘Full of E_mty’ from Omid’s Like 3 Ears And 1 Eye album.

Fair dinkum, SOS. Individually they are dynamite; collectively they are the bomb. Taking the art of DJing, moving it forward and making it truly progressive. Three DJs, three CDs and an explosive sequence of trip-tech sounds from right around the world, mixed the way SOS plays live – welcome to Balance 013!

Cielo March 2008 News : Cielo 5 Year Anniversary Album out June 17th on Tommy Boy

Friday, March 7th, 2008

Cielo is pleased to announce that their 5th Anniversary will be marked by the 5th release in the highly-acclaimed Cielo compilation series. The new compilation Cinco mixed and compiled by residents Nicolas Matar and Willie Graff will be released by Tommy Boy on June 17th. Later this month, Cielo will be well-represented at the 6th annual Club World Awards in Miami on March 26th at Set during Winter Music Conference, with nominations for Best Club (past winner 2005 & 2006), Best Party - Dance.Here.Now. and Best Resident DJ- Louie Vega at Roots.

This month, Cielo hosts the crème of New York and international DJ talent with another fine selection of some of the world’s leading house exponents.

Francois K kicks off a month of seriously seductive Monday nights as “Deep Space” lives up to its name with a truly enveloping journey of tripped out house, dubby beats and Francois’ unique blend of electronica. If you miss one Monday, don’t worry, seven days later it all happens again… and then again.

“Roots” finds Louie Vega & Kevin Hedge on deck duty at their weekly Wednesday soiree, where they’ll no doubt be road testing some past, present and future Miami classics ahead of the Winter Music Conference.

Cielo resident Willie Graff graces the decks every Friday for his “Play Time” night playing the same style of deep and tech-etched house that earned him the title of Pacha Ibiza’s youngest ever resident DJ. He’s made their Funky Room his own over the past few summers and Cielo’s dancefloor his domain the remainder of the year.

Berlin native and the mastermind behind Poker Flat Recordings, Steve Bug, headlines the Made Event on Thursday 20th. Fresh from sell-out dates in Australia and Japan, the night will feature his seminal tech-house infused beats, seductive funk grooves and edifyingly rich sonic soundscapes.

To mark the release of Cielo’s first Japanese CD, on Friday 21st we’re flying in Tokyo’s Masa - widely regarded as one of the most exciting house DJs in Japan. Masa’s no stranger to the US scene having previously worked with Blaze, Joi Cardwell, Ron Carroll, and Kenny Bobien, while as a member of Studio Apartment their acclaimed single ‘Flight’ won recognition far and wide with supporters including Gilles Peterson and Danny Krivit, and our own Francois K and Louie Vega.

London, Ibiza, New York and Sydney - Nicolas Matar has been there, seen that, done that. A DJ that refuses to be pigeonholed the Cielo resident’s monthly “Paradizo” night sees him joined by Willie Graff on the 22nd for a truly cosmopolitan affair named after our CD compilation that the guys also mixed.

Kristian Beyer from celebrated Sonar Kollectiv act Ame graces us on the 27th with a slick DJ set. The cult collective represents all that is cool, credible and sophisticated in the modern world of broken-beat and deep jazzy-house and the night promises to be another of the month’s do-not-miss events.

Finally, Friday 28th sees Nickodemus & Mariano, alongside talented percussionist Nappy G, join us for “Turntables on the Hudson”. Now into their tenth year of throwing parties the guys return for their monthly residency of sultry jazz rhythms, Eastern melodies and Afrocentric grooves.

Native Theory Launches with Hisham Samawi

Thursday, April 1st, 2004

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Native Theory Launches with Hisham Samawi

NEW YORK, NY - After emerging from Winter Music Conference 2003 with URB Magazine\’s Best New Tune - Dirty Gringos \”Cowbell\” - HISHAM SAMAWI is set to release two new original tracks (July 2004). Both tracks on the debut release of NYC-based NATIVE THEORY record label are already slated for inclusion on James Zabiela\’s Renaissance: Alive album due out this summer on System Recordings/Renaissance UK.

NATIVE THEORY the record label first emerged as an idea, then a necessary platform to release tracks that defied conventional definition. HISHAM SAMAWI is leading this charge with two of his original productions on the label\’s debut 12\” \”Holding On / Spirals.\” \”None of our tracks fit neatly into the predefined genres that often stigmatize existing labels.\” Hisham says. \”At the end of the day, we believe in the quality of our music and are proud to release it on our new label.\” Together with production partner DENNIS RODGERS (112 Crew) there are already several tracks set for release later this year.

Born in Libya and raised in Switzerland, HISHAM SAMAWI is currently part of the new wave of talented DJs & producers emerging on the global dancescape from New York City. Notable globetrotting DJs Lee Burridge and James Zabiela both regarded Hisham as one of the best new artists to emerge from Winter Music Conference 2004. During the last year, Hisham divided his time in the studio and with gigs around the world. In early 2004, Hisham completed an Asia tour with headlining gigs in Bangkok, Singapore, and Dubai and has also graced the decks at all the major NYC clubs: Centro-Fly (RIP), Discotheque, Filter 14, Sullivan Room and the closing party at Arc with Lee Burridge and the 112 Crew. With an increasingly busy US tour schedule, Hisham has been invited back for return gigs in Charlotte, Los Angeles, Chicago and a new residency at Privilege nightclub in Miami.

As a DJ, the music he blends together has been described as \”future music.\” It\’s an amalgam of tracks that are obscure (you won\’t see these charted on anyone\’s Top 10) but mixed together they are the soundtrack for a dancefloor odyssey. On his own sets, Hisham says \”I don\’t really know what to call my sound. I just play records that move me and let others worry about what it is called. In my opinion, a good DJ makes everyone leave the club thinking he played a different sound. A good DJ makes a techno fan think he heard techno that night and a house head think he heard house.\”

With several tracks played and charted by many of the scene\’s most respected DJs, the industry is taking notice of Hisham\’s production talent. In 2003, his remix of the classic track \”Atlas - Compass Error\” on Plastica Red/R.I.P was hailed as \”earth-shattering\” and a \”can\’t miss release\” by Big Shot Magazine and DJ Hyper labeled it a \”stunning breakbeat mix\” in his review for iDJ. Besides his solo productions, Hisham is one third of the production group, Dirty Gringos (with Brendan Benke and Dennis Rodgers-112 Crew), which earned high distinction from URB Magazine during WMC 2003 for the Christopher Walken sampled \”Cowbell.\” His productions have already received huge support from top DJ talent including Sasha & John Digweed, Danny Tenaglia, Lee Burridge , Danny Howells, Sander Kleinenberg , DJ Three and James Zabiela. Never a moment
