Listed presents the Balance 016: Agoria album release party with Agoria for his Miami debut, and Balance artists Joris Voorn, Will Saul, Desyn Masiello, Luke Fair, Chris Fortier, and Emerson Todd, along with special guests Three, along with Listed’s Dory & Hac Le and EQ Recordings’ Tom Pandzic @ Hotel Victor on Friday, March 26th, 2010 during WMC week.

After raising the bar to unprecedented heights in 2009 with Joris Voorn and Will Saul’s stunning additions to the series, EQ Recordings’ Balance series returns for the new decade with yet another standard-setting mix from one of the most sophisticated and inspiring names in techno, Frenchman – Agoria.

The man otherwise known as Sebastien Devaud wasn’t bitten by the dance music bug until he was out of his teens, but once he began hunting imported 12”s from the US and Germany in his native France, there was no turning back. His production career began in 1999, with his debut album Blossom and first compilation following in 2003 – and it was clear even in those early days that a serious new talent was emerging. His 2007 At The Controls compilation set a new standard for minimal tech-house with its impeccable programming and seductive mixing. Now with Balance 016, Agoria continues to blend the throb and groove of deeper, stripped-back techno with a keen sense of musicality, emotion and atmosphere, his is a sound that transcends beyond mere dancefloor disposability.

Agoria explains his intention for this intricate compilation: “The concept of both CDs is all about balance. Literally. In my mind a balance is not a middle position; it’s a perfect equilibrium. I’m trying to be as close as possible to this idea. I have tried to find this fine line where the balance is just right.” To accomplish this perfectly-weighted contrast, he’s cherry-picked from a myriad of genres and subgenres in his “beat open-minded” fashion, combining a wealth of material from newcomers across the spectrum (including no less than 12 exclusives!) with more established producers, classics and unknown gems from his broad musical past, and put it all together in an unconventional, challenging manner. “In the end, more than a DJ compilation, this is a manifesto of my passion for music and for mixing” he explains.

Joining Agoria for this exclusive event will be a slew of past Balance artists.  Joris Voorn released one of the most well received Balance editions.  His 100+ tracklist of exclusive edits, chops, and mixes single handedly raised the bar for all future mix compilations.  Balance 15 saw Will Saul bring an eclectic mix of his trademark discohousetechno sound.  His 3 CD’s worth of music travelled the landscape of sounds that Will is capable of playing.    As part of the SOS collective, Desyn Masiello (Balance 013) is known as a globetrotting DJ and consistent crowd favorite wherever he goes.  His music represents the finest that smooth house and techno have to offer and his DJ sets flow with the energy that comes from his own enthusiasm behind the decks.  Luke Fair (Balance 011) has gone from a Canadian favorite to a worldwide DJ hero quite a small amount of time.  His sound encompasses all things house, featuring melodic landscapes, as well as thick basslines.    Chris Fortier (Balance 007) has maintained a solid career in dance music which spans nearly two decades.  His sound incorporates everything from progressive to minimal and just about everything in between.  A favorite of crowds and DJ’s alike; Chris Fortier is able to call himself one of the most respected figures in the game.   Cocoon and Dirtybird favorite Emerson Todd has enjoyed a spike in his artistic profile recently with a slew of residencies, releases, and international gigs.  The native New Zealander’s style can best be described as rolling tech house.  This is surely a name to look out for quite some time. The perennial favorite DJ’s DJ,  Three joins the Balance soiree as a very special guest, along with Listed’s Dory & Hac Le and EQ Recordings label head Aussie Tom Pandzic.

Made Event presents JORIS VOORN : Balance 014 @ Cielo – July 3rd

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Friday, July 3rd, 2009
Made Event presents
JORIS VOORN

Made Event presents Holland’s shinning star Joris Voorn at Cielo on Friday, July 3, 2009, following the release of his stunning 2xCD Balance 014 compilation on EQ Recordings.

Dutch DJ/Producer Joris Voorn is hotly tipped as the next big thing, with the release of his magnificent Balance 014 compilation. Across two discs and using – remarkably – over 100 tracks, Joris constructs a complex, layered and seamless mix of some of the best tech house, minimal and electronic dance music. An epic mix in the very best sense of the word, Joris achieves the rare feat of combining variety and consistency, both on the album and on dancefloors alike. This Labor Day weekend, sparks will fly as the Dutch star makes his return to NYC.

Performing a yet near impossible task of making 100 tracks mesh and work together in 2 continuous mixes, Joris Voorn draws on a depth of talent unlikely to be repeated on a mix CD compilation. It takes a visionary DJ to combine tracks from Radiohead, through to Goldie, Leftfield, Jimpster, Aphex Twin, Dubfire, System 7, Minilogue, Cobblestone Jazz, Emmanuel Top, Joakim, Âme, Mood II Swing, Ricardo Villalobos, Radio Slave, Carl Craig, Flying Lotus, Marc Romboy, Robert Babicz, Tiger Stripes just to name a few. This isn’t a CD you skip through. In some cases one track is in fact 6 different tracks from various artists. By allowing the tracks breathe at the right time, Joris crafts the mix ever so smoothly; riding along without you even noticing that you are passing from tune to tune. It’s all about the subtle transitions, the loops, the multiple layers that make Balance 014 a musical composition in its own right.

Balance 014 is unlike any mix compilation and fans of the series will appreciate the beautifully eclectic collection of music, the innovative blends, and the superb technical skills this set presents”.- Image Magazine

Essentially following the Richie Hawtin blueprint of mixing many tracks  at once into entirely new  morasses of beautiful noise, over the course of two CDS Voorn melts lush tech-house, minimal techno, deep electronica, folk and much more into a perfectly judged voyage across widescreen vistas, quite stunning in their scope.  This is truly DJing 2.0 – Joris Voorn belongs in the pantheon of dancefloor titans for this instant classic.” – DJ Mag

Next to being a showcase of Joris’ incredible skills, Balance 014 is among the best in its series and one of the hottest compilations to appear these months.” -365Mag

It is one of those rare CD’s that you can’t fast forward even 8 bars or you might miss something.  In many cases, 1 track is actually several tracks from different artists.  He might just use a small loop from one, a break from another and so on and so on.  This is a very intense journey through some of the best tech house, minimal and electronic music out there.”-DJ Times

Voorn’s hand at marrying club anthems with ambient interludes is a gift to the series, and raises the bar for future compilations.”-EDGE

MARCH 7 – DENNIS FERRER & SEBO K with ANTHONY PARASOLE
Right place, right time may be the best way to sum up Dennis Ferrer in so many words. Always seeming to be on the forefront of current musical trends, Dennis is no stranger to crafting his sound to continually be regarded as one of the top producers in the industry. Dennis’ new imprint, Objektivity, has seen great success from some unlikely places and some from right around the block, giving an American take on the deep house revival sweeping Europe at the moment. The latest release teams up Ferrer’s protégés, The Martinez Brothers with Berlin’s Argy on “Debbie Downer” for a cross-continental dancefloor deep-tech vibe. No stranger to that revival is Sebo K, a long time key figure in Berlin’s electronic dance music community. With current deep house anthem “Diva”, Sebo’s music can be heard in many different DJ’s sets all over the globe. The American and German sound come together to create a special Objektivity night on New York’s hottest new sound system. After a solid opening set for Cassy, New York’s own son  Anthony Parasole will be back once again to set the night off just right.

MARCH 14  – GUIDO SCHNEIDER & DAMIAN SCHWARTZ with PLEXUS
Madrid based DJ and producer, Damian Schwartz comes to New York packed with an arsenal of his own personal feelings and concepts in modern electronic music, described as raw sequences, daily samples, strong patters, frantic rhythms and some innovation born in the streets of Spain. His own output can be heard on his own Mupa label and as a CMYK recording artist. Also no stranger to being locked in the studio, Guido Schneider from Poker Flat recordings fame has seen huge success with a string of massive releases and some choice remixes on Taksi and Minus. Joining the crew will be other Minus cohort Plexus, a local favorite around the New York minimal scene

MARCH 21 – SETH TROXLER & MATHIAS KADEN

Having smash hits on leading labels like Wagon Repair and Crosstown Rebels, this rising techno star is definitely drawing international attention and recognition. Germany’s Mathias Kaden has also been raising eyebrows over here in the U.S. after a rousing performance at DEMF. This Freude Am Tanzen & Vakant label mainstay’s unique repertoire includes funky and freaky rhythms enriched by African and South American percussions. This will be his exciting NYC debut! No need for an opener on this night, just the dynamic duo – Seth and Mathias. So come early and stay late until the lights come on.

Sunday School For Degenerates graduates from [the now defunct] Pawn Shop to the expansive Ice Palace in downtown Miami. Now in its 4th year, SSFD continues to curate one the most exciting, international selections of underground techno artists for one of the most highly anticipated parties of the year. Every year, Sunday School brings together techno aficionados from all points east and west, along with a who’s who in the industry.  With multiple rooms of music – all night inside with outdoor terrace and all day in the outdoor garden complete with grassy lawn and palm trees, Made Event will design the raw space in time for winter recess, along with a complete sound system custom installed and engineered by the uncompromising Integral Sound. This will be a 24 hour madcap adventure that will top off the Winter Music Conference week for the professional clubber.

Sunday School staple and NYC Save the Cannibals arch selector Adultnapper will be making his fourth appearance behind the DJ pulpit with his elaborate swung micro-rhythms, thick musical basslines, complex arrangements and haunting tonal melodies. Greece’s Argy makes his U.S. Debut, following last year’s acclaimed album Focus On Argy on Poker Flat. Also making his U.S. debut, Barem straight from Argentina, has been hailed as the top new, emerging minimal techno producer. Berlin’s Panorama Bar’s first lady of techno and Save the Cannibals high priestess, Cassy makes her sophomore appearance after a legendary closing set in 2007. French super producer and DJ extraordinaire D’Julz will be making a long-awaited comeback to Miami with his house and techno music rife with tribal, dub, and funk influences. Israeli producer Guy Gerber returns to SSFD and continues his hot streak with brilliant “Timing” release on Cocoon Recordings. Swedish Ida Engberg is Drumcode’s secret weapon, bringing a touch of female finesse to a predominately male genre of hard techno. Dutch DJ/Producer Joris Voorn is on the verge of greatness with his astounding Balance 14 compilation with over 100 tracks deftly mixed on 2CDs to be released this Spring. Joris delivers expert technical mixing and a drift between deep afterhour grooves and maximal bombs. Marco Carola has emerged in the last decade to be one of Italy’s most influential exports of techno and electronic music, now with his own string of releases on Minus sub-label 2M. Intim Recordings principal and Save the Cannibals chieftain, Martin Landsky is a globetrotting ambassador of the sound that bridges techno to funk, house to minimal, and a bit of everything in between.  He has long been one of the key figures in the circle of producers at Poker Flat Recordings with a penchant for deep music that includes twisty and funky elements. Freude Am Tanzen & Vakant label mainstay, Mathias Kaden’s unique repertoire includes the funky, freaky rhythms enriched by African and South American percussions.

From Detroit’s techno scene, Ghostly’s Matthew Dear has evolved into a genre defying electronic music sensation. With his many production guises – Audion, Jabberjaw, and False, he continually pushes the envelope in the world of techno. Also a Save the Cannibals NYC resident, he is now set to release a brand new monthly series of Audion 12” releases, leading up to a new artist album slated for the summer. Sunday School headmaster Mr. C. has long been one of the original proponents of tech house with over 25 years of mixing vinyl. Turkish delight, Onur Özer is one of the most in demand DJs and producers on the continent, appearing here in his highly anticipated U.S. debut. With a string of massive releases, his music veers into mystical arabesque and turkish art music with deep synthetic pulses in his own unique style. Detroit son Ryan Crosson crafts techno and house tied to the historical precedent of his hometown, married with the new minimal aesthetics of his adopted Berlin. His acclaimed releases on diverse and groundbreaking labels like Minus, Telegraph, Trapez, and Wagon Repair, have vaulted him into the senior class. One of the brightest up-and-comers in the scene, Spectral Sound’s Seth Troxler move from Detroit to Berlin also continues to exemplify the mergence of his local roots with the European minimal techno and house aesthetic. With his debut “Love Never Sleeps” EP out now on Crosstown Rebels and Save the Cannibals NYC residency, this young prodigy is one to watch. Diynamic label boss, Solomun from the heart of Bosnia, has been hosting top nights in Hamburg at the famed DIY club. Also a Diynamic favorite, hotly tipped Hamburg producer Stimming will be playing live to proselytize his unique blend of highly melodic, emo-techno with tracks from his upcoming debut LP Reflections. Germany’s techno pioneer and minimal dance connoisseur, Steve Bug is one of the original SSFD principal members and Save the Cannibals resident. He is one of the scene’s unsung heroes and stands proudly at the helm of three influential labels – Dessous, Audiomatique Recording, and Poker Flat, now celebrating its 10 year anniversary with All in! The Anniversary Compilation.
