Cielo ‘Cinco’ E-card (Preview Album Here)

Summer edges ever closer in the city and Cielo continues to feel the heat with an all star line-up of international guests and local heroes to ring in the new season.

Things kick off on Tuesday 3rd with our Adult Section night hosting the talents of Metro Area’s Darshan Jesrani. Metro Area burst onto the scene almost a decade ago, the brainchild of veteran producers Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani, born out of the duo’s dichotomous love of both the old moods of R&B, disco and boogie and the more cutting-edge sound of innovative house and techno. Detroit-esque futurism, Chicago’s abstract tracks, and the warmth of New York and New Jersey’s deep house are all part of the MA experience. Meanwhile Citizen Kane is on hand to add their own styling to proceedings on a night that promises to start things off in style.

Another month and another birthday celebration at Dance Here Now - on the 5th it’s Tom Stephan’s turn to blow out the candles. The thirty-something DJ/producer is another Big Apple native that morphed into his now internationally known Superchumbo protagonist guise, creating and playing his trademark mind-enveloping sound collages of darker percussive elements, dark twisted drums and mesmerizing tension building house sets.

On the 6th Playtime presents Big Love featuring Seamus Haji. Haji is the man behind the creative output of the Brighton-based Big Love label, and a pop star in his own right having scored several UK hits including an update of ‘Last Night A DJ Saved My Life’, and most recently working with hip-house don Doug Lazy. A master at weaving disco-inflected grooves that are fluffy enough for pop sensibilities, yet muscular enough to generate some much-needed street appeal, Haji’s sets similarly mix ‘n’ match the new with the old, and the underground with the crossover.

Now into its third month, don’t forget that Freedom on June 8th is the new and exclusive NYC monthly residency for Junior Vasquez.

Deep Space on the 9th finds Francois K on deck duty. Reams and reams could be said of the man who’s been filling dancefloors as a DJ, remixer and producer since the late-70s. But Philly hit-man King Britt neatly sums things up when he says: “He’s the only person to bring remixing full circle from late-70s to present and has revolutionized the way we listen to sound.” He’s joined on the night by a live set from Norway’s Bugge Wesseltoft. Since the early-90s Bugge (conveniently pronounced Boogie!) has made an impressive, truly post-modern transition from Nordic jazz to create a style he refers to as “future jazz” which sits equally well with fans of deep-house and techno, as well as traditional and experimental jazz purists. There’s a $12 cover charge on the night that runs from 10pm-3:30am.

LA-based house head Marques Wyatt’s summer monthly residency, Deep, commences on June 13th with what promises to another self-assured night of deep soulful grooves and uplifting gospel-etched house.

Cielo resident Nicolas Matar is sure to drop tracks from the new Cielo compilation ‘Cinco’ on Thursday 14th at Paradizo. ‘Cinco’ is a celebration of our fifth anniversary, to be released July 8th on Tommy Boy with each disc mixed by residents Nicolas Matar and Willie Graff respectively. UK’s Update Magazine just awarded it 5 Dancin’ Men and referred to it as “a sleek, sexy, soul-soothing collection featuring new music and remixes from the likes of Carl Craig, Ultra Nate, Arnold Jarvis, Swayzak, Kenny Bobien, K-Scope, Charles Webster, Nick Holder, Alix Alvarez, DJ Pippi, Justin Martin and Manoo & Francois A, and a dozens more beside across 2CDs. In a time where we’re increasingly being told to find new ways to let off stream from the riggers of city living, this comes as the ideal tonic.”

Harry “Choo Choo” Romero returns to Cielo on Thursday for 19th Dance Here Now. The former Subliminal man’s sets are legendary as HCCR drops a funk-infused blend of burbling electro-etched basslines, twisted tribalism, and darker progressiveness. The night runs from 10pm-4am and promises set to be a sell out, so to avoid disappointment $20 advance tickets are available from www.danceherenownyc.com.

Another guaranteed sellout on Friday 20th sees Basic New York welcome Jody Wisternoff and guests Sleepy and Boo. Jody made his name in Way Out West, one of the key progressive house acts for over a decade, with a handful of acclaimed albums to their name. After achieving commercial success and critical acclaim as a producer, remixer and DJ, 2006 saw him release his first single under his own name, which quickly topped the Beatport download listing winning new friends in the process. As a DJ he quick to say he “embraces the exciting fresh sounds, shunning the populist/lowest common denominator fodder”. Little wonder his musical passion has always kept him ahead of the game. With support dates alongside Derrick Carter, Mark Farina and Terry Frances, Basic New York resident’s Sleepy and Boo’s credentials speak volumes. The attendance is a no-brainer! (The night runs 11pm-4am, with advance tickets $15 from www.wantickets.com or $20 on the door)

There’s more Deep Space on the 23rd with DJ Spinna headlining the night. Known to his mum as Vince Williams, the Brooklyn resident by his own account is “something of an anomaly in music. A humbling example of what it takes to truly succeed within the framework of multiple fields. A steadfast work ethic, an obsessively extensive vinyl library and the willingness to pursue the full extents of his roots (funk, soul and jazz), foundation (hip-hop) and future (electronic/dance music) with no restraints.” Musically he plays all of the above with a verve and passion few can match, let along better. (The night runs 10pm-3:30am with a $12 cover).

Dance Here Now chalks up its first year on Thursday 26th with an anniversary party featuring a trio of legends of New York house - Danny Krivit, Hex Hector, and Tedd Patterson. We could list their credentials that include Grammy Awards, acclaimed and innovative remixes and guaranteed places booked in House Music’s Hall of Fame – but come hear for yourself on the must attend night of the month (10pm-4am, $20 advance tickets from www.danceherenownyc.com). Incidentally Tedd Patterson is the monthly Vibal resident that is on the 7th this month.

Things round off on the 27th with the monthly Made Event featuring a live showcase from Jake Fairley under his Fairmont alter ego or his “soft side” as Canadian techno-meister likes to call it. His songs evoke heartache and lonely nights, making listeners smile or cry depending on how their day’s going. Fairmont’s midtempo live act is deep and danceable, yet friendly and personal and has to be witness first hand to be fully understood. (Advance tickets are $15 from www.made-event.com).

Cielo ‘Cinco’ Album Release Party

‘Cinco’ Mixed By Nicolas Matar & Willie Graff (Tommy Boy)

Cielo celebrates the release of its 5 year compilation album CINCO, with an album release party on Saturday, May 31st with resident DJs Nicolas Matar and Willie Graff. The release party is in advance of the album’s release date on Tommy Boy on July 8th and Graff’s annual pilgrimage to Ibiza for his summer residency.

CINCO is an eclectic amalgam of styles incorporating deep house, techno embellishments, and soulful vibes. The album begins in classic style with Carl Craig’s C2 remix of pianist Francesco Tristano’s “The Melody” and features a selection of tracks with a Spanish homegrown flair from longtime Ibiza cohort DJ Pippi and Willie Graff, as well as legendary Spaniards Kiko Navarro and Cesar De Melero. Also included are the latest tracks from Tommy Boy artists Ultra Naté and Louie Vega, three stunning remixes from Charles Webster, and contributions from dub-techno duo Swayzak, Billboard #1 Hot Dance Club Play artist Joi Cardell, NYC Small Wonder DJ/producer Alix Alvarez, owner of Toronto’s acclaimed DNH Records Nick Holder for NRK, keyboardist Eric Kupper as K-Scope, Osunlade as Nomumbah, and deep soulful house artist Halo Varga amongst the talented collection.

The duo of Nicolas Matar and Willie Graff artfully combine their common musical bearings and experienced DJ styles across the Cielo compilation series. Matar has developed his eclectic sound by playing in the most celebrated nightclubs in the world over the past fifteen years. His skillful DJ’ing combines elements of jazz, deep house, techno and African and Latin influences. Matar eventually opened Cielo in 2003 in order to create a spiritual and musical counterpart to the best of clubbing he had witnessed globally. He brought in resident DJ, Willie Graff, who is known for spinning an array of house music genres while incorporating a deep, moody and minimal style. Graff performs at the hottest clubs around the globe and is also the world renowned Pacha Ibiza’s resident DJ during the summer season.

For those who’ve never ventured inside the retro-futuristic club and housed it up on the sunken dance-floor - mind and body lifted by its crisp, pure, heavenly sound - the Cielo compilation series transports you to Cielo for the perfect night of clubbing. For the faithful, it will expand horizons. Widely recognized as the ‘Best Club’ in North America by The Club World Awards (winner in 2008, 2006 & 2005) and top-ranked annually in DJ Mag’s Top Clubs of the World, Cielo and the unprecedented success of the compilation series, has amassed a worldwide audience and appeals to the more mature and seasoned dance music aficionados. Cielo – May 2008 News

Cielo’s brand new 5 year anniversary compilation ‘Cinco‘, mixed by residents Nicolas Matar and Willie Graff will now be released on Tommy Boy on July 8th. As you’d expect it’s a sleek, sexy, soul-soothing mix featuring tracks by Carl Craig, Ultra Nate, Arnold Jarvis, Swayzak, Kenny Bobien, K-Scope and many more across 2 cds. At the end of the month, please join us for an exclusive ‘Cinco‘ album release party on Saturday, May 31st.Since opening in 2003 Cielo has quickly become one of the most highly regarded clubs on the planet - and with more awards to its name in that time then any other nightclub including recently being voted “Best Club” of 2008 and “Best Party” 2008 at the Club World Awards. Roots resident Louie Vega underscores our achievements when he says: “Cielo is the blueprint for the quintessential club of today. It captures New York City nightlife at its finest. Perfect sound, decor, atmosphere and a great crowd have made it a magical venue!

Right then, down to business and the May calendar shows exactly why Cielo is a multi-award winner with another cutting edge selection of visionary guest DJs to compliment our equally lauded residents.

Dance.Here.Now. our recent award winner in the Best Party category at the Club World Awards, sets the tempo nicely on the 1st with the arrival of the shining Mark Knight. The man behind the highly consistent Toolroom Records label has had a fantastic couple of years building his reputation as one of the UK’s brightest new breed of DJs mixing big-room funky house with electro-etched grooves. “I’m trying to push a fusion sound of techno-meets-house-meets-minimal, incorporating sounds and production techniques from each sub-genre to create something new,” says the man who obviously likes to defy pigeonholing.

Chateaux Flight, from Versatile Records in France, joins Willie Graff for his Play Time night on Friday the 2nd. The Parisian house duo of Gilbert Cohen and Nicolas Chaix (aka Gilb’r and I:Cube) are leading purveyors of the Gallic groove placing as much emphasis on diversity as on quality with their respective releases and DJ sets. A dreamy night of orchestrated electronica and beat-driven new wave is promised from the crazy Frenchmen.

Having launched his new and exclusive NYC residency last month, Junior Vasquez’s Freedom party marches on in May with two sizzling hot nights of aural pleasure promised. Mark the 4th and 18th in your diary now for more Philadelphia Freedom from the legend that is Junior Vasquez.

If you’re looking for sun-kissed grooves, and white island charm then Kiko Navarro’s appearance on the 10th at Paradizo is an absolute must. For over a decade the Spanish DJ/producer has been creating eclectic and sensuous sounds that meld euphoric soulful house with organic Balearic grooves, supple electronic textures and percussive Afro-Latin rhythms leading to residencies at Pacha Ibiza, Pacha Mallorca and Neighbourhood for Buzzin’ Fly London.

Fresh from being voted the #1 remixer of all time by DJ magazine, Carl Craig shows exactly why he’s referred to as a master of all trades and a jack of none! His quarterly residency Demon Days, returns on May 15th and plays hosts to the Detroit native that many say is in a category all of his own. With a 20-year career spanning techno’s most timeless album masterpiece (1995’s ‘Landcruising’), countless classic singles, a string of acclaimed remixes and even an unwitting role in the formative alchemy of drum & bass, this will be Craig’s last U.S. DJ date until September!

Benji Candelario is a New York institution - his signature soulful house sound is the embodiment of his Manhattan upbringing during the culturally vibrant ‘70s and ‘80s, capturing the essence of the era and distinguishing him as a quintessential DJ, producer, remixer, and musician. Benji plays Paradizo on the 17th.

After last month’s 5th year anniversary celebrations Francois K’s Deep Space nights continues with the positive vibes in May with Mala of Digital Mystikz and Theo Parrish joining them on the 19th. South London’s Digital Mystikz are forerunners in the burgeoning dubstep scene, while DC’s Theo Parrish equally eclectic and uncompromising DJ sound should more then compliment proceedings.

Roots on the 21st finds Louie Vega and Kevin Hedge sharing deck duties with the legendary Tony Humphries. For an incredible four decades the Brooklyn-born DJ has helped in no small way to help shape the dance genre, and was a pivotal player and major influential in the house music movement in the ‘80s. His larger-then-life persona is still as key today as it was in those hedonistic and formative years.

Dance.Here.Now. promoter Benny Soto celebrates his birthday on the 22nd (and will also no doubt be raising a glass to further cheer collecting an award in the “Best Party” category at the Club World Awards) with the legendary Danny Tenaglia. On the heels of a fresh new single, “The Space Dance” and performing at the legendary Coachella Festival on the same bill as Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters and Prince, Danny will be doing what he does best - getting back to business on the dancefloor. Happy birthday Benny!

The month rounds off with a visit from Italy’s leading multifaceted techno DJ / producer Marco Carola with Willie Graff at the Made Event on the 30th. Marco’s deep and seductive bleed of house, tribal and minimal techno has also seen him translate his live style onto vinyl recording for several key labels including Richie Hawtin’s Plus 8 imprint.

As we mentioned at the start of the newsletter, ‘Cinco‘ our upcoming Tommy Boy Cielo compilation, is out shortly, and we’ll be celebrating on the 31st with an album launch party hosted by the resident DJs and mixmasters of the album, Nicolas Matar and Willie Graff. The night promises your chance to sample key tracks from the album that also includes new music and remixes from the likes of Charles Webster, Nick Holder, Alix Alvarez, DJ Pippi, Justin Martin and Manoo & Francois A.
