Listed presents the Balance 016: Agoria album release party with Agoria for his Miami debut, and Balance artists Joris Voorn, Will Saul, Desyn Masiello, Luke Fair, Chris Fortier, and Emerson Todd, along with special guests Three, along with Listed’s Dory & Hac Le and EQ Recordings’ Tom Pandzic @ Hotel Victor on Friday, March 26th, 2010 during WMC week.

After raising the bar to unprecedented heights in 2009 with Joris Voorn and Will Saul’s stunning additions to the series, EQ Recordings’ Balance series returns for the new decade with yet another standard-setting mix from one of the most sophisticated and inspiring names in techno, Frenchman – Agoria.

The man otherwise known as Sebastien Devaud wasn’t bitten by the dance music bug until he was out of his teens, but once he began hunting imported 12”s from the US and Germany in his native France, there was no turning back. His production career began in 1999, with his debut album Blossom and first compilation following in 2003 – and it was clear even in those early days that a serious new talent was emerging. His 2007 At The Controls compilation set a new standard for minimal tech-house with its impeccable programming and seductive mixing. Now with Balance 016, Agoria continues to blend the throb and groove of deeper, stripped-back techno with a keen sense of musicality, emotion and atmosphere, his is a sound that transcends beyond mere dancefloor disposability.

Agoria explains his intention for this intricate compilation: “The concept of both CDs is all about balance. Literally. In my mind a balance is not a middle position; it’s a perfect equilibrium. I’m trying to be as close as possible to this idea. I have tried to find this fine line where the balance is just right.” To accomplish this perfectly-weighted contrast, he’s cherry-picked from a myriad of genres and subgenres in his “beat open-minded” fashion, combining a wealth of material from newcomers across the spectrum (including no less than 12 exclusives!) with more established producers, classics and unknown gems from his broad musical past, and put it all together in an unconventional, challenging manner. “In the end, more than a DJ compilation, this is a manifesto of my passion for music and for mixing” he explains.

Joining Agoria for this exclusive event will be a slew of past Balance artists.  Joris Voorn released one of the most well received Balance editions.  His 100+ tracklist of exclusive edits, chops, and mixes single handedly raised the bar for all future mix compilations.  Balance 15 saw Will Saul bring an eclectic mix of his trademark discohousetechno sound.  His 3 CD’s worth of music travelled the landscape of sounds that Will is capable of playing.    As part of the SOS collective, Desyn Masiello (Balance 013) is known as a globetrotting DJ and consistent crowd favorite wherever he goes.  His music represents the finest that smooth house and techno have to offer and his DJ sets flow with the energy that comes from his own enthusiasm behind the decks.  Luke Fair (Balance 011) has gone from a Canadian favorite to a worldwide DJ hero quite a small amount of time.  His sound encompasses all things house, featuring melodic landscapes, as well as thick basslines.    Chris Fortier (Balance 007) has maintained a solid career in dance music which spans nearly two decades.  His sound incorporates everything from progressive to minimal and just about everything in between.  A favorite of crowds and DJ’s alike; Chris Fortier is able to call himself one of the most respected figures in the game.   Cocoon and Dirtybird favorite Emerson Todd has enjoyed a spike in his artistic profile recently with a slew of residencies, releases, and international gigs.  The native New Zealander’s style can best be described as rolling tech house.  This is surely a name to look out for quite some time. The perennial favorite DJ’s DJ,  Three joins the Balance soiree as a very special guest, along with Listed’s Dory & Hac Le and EQ Recordings label head Aussie Tom Pandzic.

Sunday School For Degenerates will once again descend upon Miami to mark the end of conference week in grand fashion.  Now in its fifth installment, the 24 hour party extravaganza has become a virtual who’s who of industry figures, the world’s most elite underground techno artists, and slews of ‘in the know’ clubbers.  This year, Made Event will be bringing the 24 hour lesson in afterhours debauchery back to downtown Miami’s massive Ice Palace.  On Saturday night, the venue will open its huge indoor area for dancing, as well as outdoor terrace lounge for chilling.   The outdoor garden, complete with shade, seating, and DJ sets along with palm trees, verdant lawns, and bright yellow school buses, will be open for business all day on Sunday. As expected, the space will feature a unique layout, full bar and food for the entire 24 hours, and a fully customized sound system from Integral Sound.

The 2010 edition of Sunday School For Degenerates kicks off on the evening of Saturday, March 27th as Victor Calderone takes to the decks for a very special performance inside Ice Palace’s massive indoor area.  A veritable virtuoso of the scene, Pacha NYC resident DJ, Calderone has inspired, enthralled and entertained music fans the world over for 20+ years.  Lately, he has morphed his traditional tribal based sound into the realms of energizing techno, and doing so with amazing results.  This style has been on full display recently, including an inspired set at the Sunday School tent at the inaugural Electric Zoo festival in NYC.  Playing alongside Calderone will be Drumcode label head Adam Beyer.  Beyer has been a globetrotting ambassador of all things techno and the figurehead of the Swedish techno scene for well over a decade.

On Sunday morning and all day long, SSFD welcomes their eclectic lineup of techno heavyweights, beginning with Sunday School staple Adultnapper.  Every time he steps to the decks, he brings his haunting brand of micro rhythmic techno, enthralling and hypnotizing even the most jaded of audiences.   One of the most sophisticated and inspiring names in  techno, Frenchman Agoria brings his distinct sound to Miami for his Miami debut!  His Balance 016: Agoria is a huge 2CD mix which continues the compilation’s trend of releasing groundbreaking mixes from some of the world’s most forward thinking artists.  Dig Deeper founder and worldwide DJ favorite Danny Howells makes his first SSFD appearance this year.  Known for extended sets that push the limits of progressive, house, and techno, Danny Howells surely needs no further introduction.  Get Physical boss DJ T is veteran of the club scene for 20+ years and now leads one of the industry’s most respected labels.  He has just come off a world tour for his artist album The Inner Jukebox and his latest mix, Fabric 51: DJ T is out soon.  Parisian trio dOP have been relentlessly touring the world for the last three years and these Supplemental Facts favorites are bringing their unique and innovative live set.   One of the true underground hero’s of techno, Function is bringing his ferocious live set exclusively to Sunday School. Last year she was a newcomer, but with arguably one of the event’s favorite sets, Swedish Ida Engberg returns for round 2.   The king of eclectic techno and Tyrant partner Lee Burridge brings his wonky, bouncy, and sublime techno. Freude Am Tanzen and Vakant mainstay Mathias Kaden has built a unique sound based around funky and freaky rhythms drawn from global influences.  His latest album Studio 10 attests to Mathias’ ability to focus on quality over quantity, centering diverse live performances around simple beats.  A Circo Loco favorite, Moon Harbour’s Matthias Tanzmann is rooted in deep grooves with a sound that ranges from European influenced deep house on through to minimal, and bordering on advanced techno.  Another favorite, Mr.C has been an underground hero for over two decades.  His collaboration with Adultnapper, Sycophant Slags has just released their “Keep Off” EP and video on Poker Flat Recordings. Minus artist and spanish techno veteran Paco Osuna’s rich textures, analogue EFX, loose drum crescendos, and memorable vocal samples will highlight his set from this Plus 8 favorite.  Polish techno star Pawel plays exclusively for Sunday School, with a decade’s worth of single’s, a self titled artist album and the much respected label Orphanear to his credit. Adding something a little different to the stacked lineup of established techno heavyweights will be Frenchman Sébastien Léger adding his own signature sound to the mix.  Having recently been named #8 in Resident Advisor’s Best DJs of 2009 Poll, Seth Troxler has rapidly gained notoriety throughout the scene. From Detroit to Berlin and everywhere in between, Seth has made a name for himself playing some of the most unique sets in the business, while noticeably enjoying every minute he steps behind the decks. His next move for world domination is an unsurprisingly excellent compilation for BPitch’s Boogybytes Vol. 5. Boston upstarts Soul Clap have busted onto the scene in a big way.  With releases on Wolf + Lamb and Airdrop to their credit, they are able to throw down sets comprised of everything from deep house and techno mixed with R&B and soul elements.  Now returning for the 5th year, Dessous, Poker Flat, and Audiomatique founder Steve Bug has been one of the scene’s unsung pioneers and a Made Event favorite for some time. Tom Middleton brings his jedi mind tricks and canny ability to play almost any kind of music imaginable, while surprising all who think otherwise. Rounding out this massive lineup is Dessous favorite Vincenzo.  Drawing influence from the acid house movement of the late 80’s and bridging the gap between deep house and minimal, Vincenzo continues to reinvent electronic music, as well as collaborate with some of the scene’s finest.

“Made Event’s annual Sunday School for Degenerates party…has become mandatory for all of the WMC’s technoheads. It’s one of the conference’s best bashes, in vibe and in music.”Time Out New York
“WMC’s marquis techno party, Sunday School for Degenerates. A lesson in the afterhours.”Residentadvisor.net
“As for the crowd, its Miami’s most clued-up and cosmopolitan getting debauched and disheveled for one last time.” – DJ Mag
This party was for me the way all after-parties should be, and showed me what techno could be about and what my music can do.” – Guy Gerber

BALANCE 016: AGORIA + WMC 2010 DATES

Monday, February 8th, 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Agoria - Balance 16
BALANCE 016: AGORIA
Label: EQ Recordings
U.S. Release Date: March 16, 2010

Blending the throb and groove of deeper, stripped-back techno with a keen sense of musicality, emotion and atmosphere, his is a sound that transcends beyond mere dancefloor disposability.

Disc 1 casts Agoria not simply as a functional dancefloor engineer, but as a musical craftsman, an arranger, a conductor. It’s the sound DJing evolved – the art of composition, contrast and texture, toying with your emotion and patience and pushing and pulling your attention in different directions. We begin all beatless and atmospheric, moving through the Viennese downtempo beauty of Tosca and the haunting acoustic pop of Emiliana Torrini and onwards into Agoria’s own blend of operatics and deep electronica on “Altre Voci”. Glimpse’s “Train In Austria Pt.2″ catches us off guard with its intense emotion, before the helmsman ushers us unexpectedly towards organic instrumentation and disco grooves, all warm and familiar after the heady electronics that went before. A delicate, blessed-out climax lays the mix down to rest.

Disc 2 sees Agoria go for the 4/4 jugular, with more of the trademark sound that he is recognised for. But it’s not quite as simple as that. Even more so than on the first mix, he combines and sequences tracks in every different way, splicing several together, reintroducing the same track twice or four times, comparing and contrasting different flavours. “I thought that to find the right balance, I needed to use all the ways of mixing. Editing tracks but also letting entire tracks play. Playing 3 or 4 times the same tracks, or spinning some for just a few seconds. Loopy or not. Exclusive, classic or covers, bizarre or easy listening, happy or trippy. 4 tracks together or just one. Loosing the listener for a minute to re-catch him the minute after. Spinning a classical music work of Jonny Greenwood at the peak time. Going up and then down. Starting and finishing with the same tracks.” Familiar names like Marc Antona, Chris Carrier and Mark Broom supply a steady throb of techno and tech house rhythms – melody percolating the mix at the right moments – leading up to a dreamy, euphoric climax, laden with the joyous pianos of Serge Santiago’s re-rub of Shit Robot and Martyn’s heavenly reworking of Efdemin. Two sumptuous vocal tracks round off this incredible oeuvre, the perfect finale to bring the mix back down to earth after some epic peaks.

This superb compilation is as deep and rewarding as a well-woven novel, the dénouement of the story unfolding as the mix evolves through Agoria’s musical DNA. Yet another essential addition to the compilation series that is fast becoming the new benchmark for ambitious DJs and demanding listeners alike.
