Pacha NYC presents French Pop/Dance Music Superstar DAVID GUETTA – March 21st

Friday, March 14th, 2008

David Guetta

Friday, March 21st
Pacha NYC presents
DAVID GUETTA
w/ DAVID WAXMAN

Pacha NYC welcomes back France’s ambassador to the fabulous life DAVID GUETTA for one of the most anticipated parties of the year on Friday, March 21st. The white-hot Guetta makes a pit stop on his way down to another legendary F*ck Me I’m Famous party in Miami for a full, uninterrupted night of rocking house, power-disco and dancefloor singalongs.

A household name in his native France, multi-million selling producer, recording artist and promoter DAVID GUETTA has found the rest of the world is rapidly catching up, following the U.S. release of his third album Pop Life on Perfecto/Ultra Records.

“For me, it is all about sharing my passion with people,” he says. “That is why I am a DJ. A lot of producers, they don’t think it’s cool to play for people. But even in the studio I love to play for my friends. When I DJ, I play for the party – because I love to share my music.”

At first, taking his music to the rest of the world proved to be an eye-opener. “I went from a business class ticket to EasyJet,” he laughs. “Which is totally fine with me. It was really funny more than anything.” In Ibiza, English and American holidaymakers were initially not too sure what to make of David and his team handing out flyers full of exotic-sounding French names.

“People would laugh at us,” he remembers. “Especially the British people.” They weren’t laughing for long as Daft Punk, Cassius and the rest of the French dance scene exploded, David’s Ibizan ‘Fuck Me I’m Famous’ nights became the #1 destination, thanks to an ethos that harked back to the original spirit of clubbing.

“The idea is to have people who don’t normally mix,” says David, of the hugely successful nights he runs with his wife Cathy. “Clubbing had become like ghettos again, when it comes to my own night I try to do something different. At my night the social barriers come down – there are not many places where you can find a superstar next to a billionaire, a model dancing next to a student.”

What started as an ironic name – David wasn’t well-known at all outside France – ‘Fuck Me I’m Famous’ soon proved apt, with everyone from Kate Moss to Penelope Cruz to P Diddy joining the fortnightly pilgrimage, fired up by David’s skills as an irresistible party DJ. “My wife brings the glamorous people,” he admits, “and I bring the crazies.”

By now David had become one of the most in-demand DJs in the world, headlining nights in America, Australia, Japan, South America and beyond. Meanwhile, David’s career as a recording artist was blasting off into the stratosphere. His first two albums Just A Little More Love (2002) and Guetta Blaster (2004) had already reached 2 x gold in Europe, while the Wally Lopez mix of “Just A Little More Love” became David’s first UK hit in 2003, and remains a deathless Ibiza anthem to this day. In 2005 he was nominated for a Grammy for his remix of Deep Dish’s “Flashdance” and earned that rarest of seals of approval – the invitation to remix David Bowie, in the shape of his peerless “‘Heroes’” track. He was named DJ Of The Year at London’s House Music Awards.

Then, in 2006, David Guetta vs The Egg’s mash-up “Love Don’t Let Me Go (Walking Away)” was a Top 10 smash around the world. In the UK it held the Top 20 for over two months. It caught the eye of Paul Oakenfold who quickly signed David to his Perfecto Records label for the release of Guetta Blaster in the U.S. The song was released in America April 2007 and still continues to chart on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play chart today.

Meanwhile, three Fuck Me I’m Famous triple gold-selling mix CDs, together with a record label of the same name, plus roadblock nights at the Miami Winter Music Conference, soon ensured FMIF was one of clubland’s most revered brands. The ‘Guetta Sound’ was truly becoming a global phenomenon. “I am like a tightrope walker,”David admits. “It is difficult, but my goal is that the super-cool DJs of the world play me, but I’m being played on the radio, too. That’s very hard.”

But David is about to show that gift is no fluke. The 14 tracks on new album Pop Life prove we’re dealing with the rarest of talents – someone who can move hearts and minds on the dancefloor and the Top 40. “It’s a balancing trick,” he says. “When you make a track for the club, it is the repetitiveness that makes it work best; so it becomes hypnotic, like a trance. But when you listen at home, you look for music with a lot of changes – because that is what gives it emotion. And I love emotion. So I have to have both.”

Hitting the ground running with two huge tracks, “Love Is Gone” (classic Guetta, featuring Chris “Just A Little More Love” Willis on vocals) and “Baby When The Light” (“The total opposite of what I usually do… a very feminine kind of fragility”), Pop Life features co-writes for the first time with Cathy Dennis (Kylie Minogue) and Karen Poole (Jamelia/Girls Aloud/Lily Allen), to name two. It’s David best album to date and also suitably-named, from the one DJ who knows pop isn’t a dirty word; whose club nights are open to one and all.

“Yeah, some DJs say pop is a dirty word, but I’m trying to be different!” he says. “Of course dance music is pop music! I’m always faithful to my community, but this album also has big, quality pop melodies. It’s the best album I’ve produced. I’m really happy and proud of it.”

David Guetta’s Pop Life is out now on Perfecto/Ultra Records

Balance 013 mixed by SOS (Desyn Masiello, Omid 16B and Demi) + WMC 2008 Album Launch Parties

Balance 013 mixed by SOS
(Desyn Masiello, Omid 16B and Demi)
WMC 2008 Album Launch Parties
EQ Recordings / US Release Date: April 29th

Featuring a spot-on selection of sounds from yesterday, today and tomorrow’s electronic maestros, including an eclectic mixture of the likes of Aeroplane, Aphex Twin, Bryan Ferry, The Cure, Loco Dice, Speedy J, Omid 16B and more…

After 12 albums of cutting-edge dance music from all corners of the globe, EQ’s visionary Balance series has evolved into a never ending search to find the perfect equilibrium: the happy marriage of integrity, innovation and entertainment. Balance 013 continues this great tradition but gives it to you supersized, with three DJs blazing a trail of 56 tracks across three jam-packed CDs.

At the helm of this voyage is London-based DJ collective SOS (aka SexOnSubstance), featuring Demi, Desyn Masiello and Omid 16B. As friends, producers, DJs, label owners – and model clubland citizens – Demi, Desyn and Omid are three of the most passionate talents working in electronic music today. Taking inspiration from their SexOnWax and Deeper Substance imprints to form SOS in 2004, they’ve built a first-rate reputation for quality music, inventive mixing and an infectious party spirit, whether it’s on a boat along the Thames, deep inside Bedrock or Ministry of Sound, or glowing in the sun in Ibiza or Miami. Like Danny Krivit, François K and Joe Claussell’s legendary Body & Soul connection before them, the chemistry between the members of SOS makes for a proper three-headed DJ monster.

Balance 013 marks the first time the trio has committed their energetic and eclectic sound to CD, and the result is nothing short of mind-blowing. Having locked themselves away for weeks, submerged in their home studios, SOS painstakingly programmed and pieced together a three-disc opus using many of their signature re-edits, top-drawer treasures from underground troves, and a few kinky surprises out of left field.

The journey begins with crashing waves and a sublime guitar solo. Omid’s track ‘Seagull’, made using a simple four-track when he was in an early-90s band called The Reunion, is heard here for the very first time. We then glide into a realm of guitar loops and spaced out disco. And from there we catch a chugging, hypnotic groove that takes us right into the heart of the mix. Here the SOS sound snakes cleverly between cosmic dub, ambient breakbeats, Arabian horns and all things house. It’s a playground perfect for the more experimental shades of SOS’s palette.

The next disc continues where the first left off with The Cure’s ‘Lullaby’. However, this time it’s a special up-tempo edit that blends the blissful nostalgia of the original with a new, dreamy soundscape that lies beyond. (Actually getting clearance to use ‘Lullaby’ in this context involved another massive effort by SOS, which ultimately led to Robert Smith himself helping the guys out!) Continuing to build the mix, SOS passes through the deepest analogue territories before hitting the acid funk running. In true SOS style, things later take a turn for the surreal when the rude boys splice it up to ask, in the voice of Queen’s frontman Freddie Mercury, ‘is this the real life’? After an infusion of twisted, percussive techno, the energy flow reaches a climax before dropping back two decades to the timeless party sounds of Inner City’s ‘Big Fun’.

The final mix is every bit as epic and compelling. It’s also more club-orientated, with tracks cherry-picked from a brotherhood of underground talents. Sure enough at times it gets pretty intense, with prime dancefloor cuts from the likes of Aphex Twin, but it’s always in keeping with the ebb and flow of the project. Effortlessly organic and seamlessly dynamic, the sequence progresses, releasing pressure and leading to the atmospheric finale entitled ‘Full of E_mty’ from Omid’s Like 3 Ears And 1 Eye album.

Fair dinkum, SOS. Individually they are dynamite; collectively they are the bomb. Taking the art of DJing, moving it forward and making it truly progressive. Three DJs, three CDs and an explosive sequence of trip-tech sounds from right around the world, mixed the way SOS plays live – welcome to Balance 013!

Made Event presents STEVE BUG with Adultnapper @ Cielo – March 20th

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Steve Bug

Thursday, March 20, 2008|
Made Event presents
STEVE BUG
w/ ADULTNAPPER

Made Event presents minimal dance connoisseur and internationally renowned DJ and producer Steve Bug at Cielo with Adultnapper on Thursday, March 20th.

With over 17 years of experience, Steve Bug is truly one of the unsung leaders and innovators of the German electronic music scene and beyond. His impeccable sets reverb with seductive and laidback funk, dirty retro bass lines and random bleeps, incorporating techno, electro and basic funk into bare house grooves creating moody minimal and seductive music for the dancefloor.

With three different labels under his helm, Bug is able to cross the bridges between house & techno with his deep house oriented Dessous and the much-respected Poker Flat Recordings, the number one source for stripped down futuristic sounds with amazing musical diversity. On his third label Audiomatique, Bug has founded a playground for modern styles of techno and house. In between A&Ring the three labels and promoting two high profile club mix compilations last year- ‘Fabric 37′ from the esteemed club series and ‘Fuse presents Steve Bug’, Steve Bug is as prolific as ever. From the studio, Bug unleashed “A World Without Cru Savage” on Poker Flat where he demonstrates his chops for minimal elements put to maximum effect for the dancefloor.

Next, the brand new sixth volume in the Poker Flat series, ‘Dean Man’s Hands’ with CD1 mixed and compiled by Steve Bug, along with a bonus CD and brilliant mix by Clé is out now. Just like the notorious ‘Dead Man’s Hand’ in a high stakes all-nighter, this double CD release is full of carefully judged mind games and more than a few winning surprises from our finest artists. The album includes eight new exclusive tracks alongside the best current Poker Flat tunes on double-CD and double-12″ for that inimitable Poker Flat sound. The new album sums up perfectly the ethos of the label, that is, to produce genre defining electronic music, that works perfectly whether inside the head or on the dancefloor. If the selection, depth and field of music available here says one thing about this label of labels, it is that it’s here to stay, and it’s not about to start doing things quietly! Here’s to Poker Flat in 2008 and beyond…..

Dead Man’s Hand is a two-pair Poker hand, namely “aces and eights”. The hand gets its name due to the legend of it having been the five-card draw hand held by Wild Bill Hickock at the time of his murder (August 2, 1876). It is accepted that the hand included the aces and eights of both of the black suits. The draw was interrupted by the shooting, and he never got the fifth card he was due. Although some claim it was the 9 of Diamonds.

Cielo March 2008 News : Cielo 5 Year Anniversary Album out June 17th on Tommy Boy

Friday, March 7th, 2008

cielo

Cielo is pleased to announce that their 5th Anniversary will be marked by the 5th release in the highly-acclaimed Cielo compilation series. The new compilation Cinco mixed and compiled by residents Nicolas Matar and Willie Graff will be released by Tommy Boy on June 17th. Later this month, Cielo will be well-represented at the 6th annual Club World Awards in Miami on March 26th at Set during Winter Music Conference, with nominations for Best Club (past winner 2005 & 2006), Best Party – Dance.Here.Now. and Best Resident DJ- Louie Vega at Roots.

This month, Cielo hosts the crème of New York and international DJ talent with another fine selection of some of the world’s leading house exponents.

Francois K kicks off a month of seriously seductive Monday nights as “Deep Space” lives up to its name with a truly enveloping journey of tripped out house, dubby beats and Francois’ unique blend of electronica. If you miss one Monday, don’t worry, seven days later it all happens again… and then again.

“Roots” finds Louie Vega & Kevin Hedge on deck duty at their weekly Wednesday soiree, where they’ll no doubt be road testing some past, present and future Miami classics ahead of the Winter Music Conference.

Cielo resident Willie Graff graces the decks every Friday for his “Play Time” night playing the same style of deep and tech-etched house that earned him the title of Pacha Ibiza’s youngest ever resident DJ. He’s made their Funky Room his own over the past few summers and Cielo’s dancefloor his domain the remainder of the year.

Berlin native and the mastermind behind Poker Flat Recordings, Steve Bug, headlines the Made Event on Thursday 20th. Fresh from sell-out dates in Australia and Japan, the night will feature his seminal tech-house infused beats, seductive funk grooves and edifyingly rich sonic soundscapes.

To mark the release of Cielo’s first Japanese CD, on Friday 21st we’re flying in Tokyo’s Masa – widely regarded as one of the most exciting house DJs in Japan. Masa’s no stranger to the US scene having previously worked with Blaze, Joi Cardwell, Ron Carroll, and Kenny Bobien, while as a member of Studio Apartment their acclaimed single ‘Flight’ won recognition far and wide with supporters including Gilles Peterson and Danny Krivit, and our own Francois K and Louie Vega.

London, Ibiza, New York and Sydney – Nicolas Matar has been there, seen that, done that. A DJ that refuses to be pigeonholed the Cielo resident’s monthly “Paradizo” night sees him joined by Willie Graff on the 22nd for a truly cosmopolitan affair named after our CD compilation that the guys also mixed.

Kristian Beyer from celebrated Sonar Kollectiv act Ame graces us on the 27th with a slick DJ set. The cult collective represents all that is cool, credible and sophisticated in the modern world of broken-beat and deep jazzy-house and the night promises to be another of the month’s do-not-miss events.

Finally, Friday 28th sees Nickodemus & Mariano, alongside talented percussionist Nappy G, join us for “Turntables on the Hudson”. Now into their tenth year of throwing parties the guys return for their monthly residency of sultry jazz rhythms, Eastern melodies and Afrocentric grooves.
